Man Arrested Over Alleged Insulting Remarks Against Perlis Royal Institution

Date:

Police have detained a 37-year-old man suspected of uploading a social media post containing alleged insulting remarks against the Perlis royal institution related to a state award presentation.

Perlis police chief Datuk Muhammad Abdul Halim said the suspect was arrested yesterday afternoon after authorities received six police reports regarding the matter.

He said investigations are being conducted under Section 504 of the Penal Code, Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955.

If found guilty, the offences could result in a maximum two-year jail term or a fine of up to RM50,000.

Muhammad said police are taking the matter seriously as it involves the sensitivity of the Perlis royal institution and could potentially lead to misunderstandings as well as affect public harmony.

He urged the public to avoid making comments, spreading speculation or sharing unverified information that could disrupt public order while the investigation is ongoing.

The police chief added that firm action would be taken against any individual who violates existing laws, attempts to provoke tensions or threatens national security and peace.

The investigation follows a police report lodged on Friday by Perlis PAS Ulama Council chief Ahmad Adnan Fadzil against the owner of a Facebook account named ‘Mohd Syafeeq’.

The report was made over an alleged defamatory post believed to be linked to Ahmad Adnan receiving the Pingat Jasa Kebaktian (P.J.K), a state honour recently awarded to him.

The account owner was accused of making a statement that altered the meaning of the award by referring to it as a “medal of betrayal” instead of a recognition of service.

Police are continuing investigations to determine the full details of the case and identify any further actions required.
