The Malaysian Army (TDM) has foiled an attempt to smuggle more than 10 tonnes of frozen meat products into Indonesia through an illegal route in Serikin, Bau, Sarawak, yesterday afternoon.
The seizure involved 511 cartons of frozen meat products weighing a total of 10,220kg, with an estimated value of RM354,320.
The Intelligence Branch of the First Division Headquarters said the success came from an operation conducted by personnel from the 3rd Battalion Royal Ranger Regiment (3 RRD) under the operational control of the Third Malaysian Infantry Brigade through Ops Keris Parang.
According to the statement, soldiers detected a white lorry covered with a green canvas moving from the illegal route near Kampung Sebobok towards the Malaysia-Indonesia border during the operation.
The vehicle was later intercepted at an oil palm plantation area in Rahman Estate, Kampung Sebobok, located about 900 metres from the international border.
An inspection found that the lorry was driven by a local man and was carrying 511 cartons of frozen meat products weighing more than 10 tonnes.
The driver was unable to provide travel documents or valid documents related to the goods being transported, leading to the seizure of the vehicle and its cargo.
The suspect, along with the seized items, was handed over to the Bau District Police Headquarters (IPD) for further investigation.
The case was also referred to the Bau District Veterinary Services Department (JPV) Sarawak for enforcement action under the relevant laws.
