A massive 18.7-foot-long crocodile was captured in Marudi today, marking the biggest catch recorded by a group of licensed crocodile hunters in the area.
One of the hunters, Goh, said the large black-coloured male crocodile was caught after the team placed bait along the Baram River near the Marudi Bridge on Saturday evening.
He said the bait was set up at around 6.30pm before the team returned the following morning to inspect the trap.
“When we checked at about 8.30am today, we found that something had already taken the bait. We were shocked to discover it was a huge crocodile,”.
The captured reptile became the group’s 10th crocodile caught along the Baram River in Marudi this year.
The hunters had previously captured five crocodiles in June, followed by another four on July 18, after receiving complaints from villagers over increasing crocodile sightings in the river.
The latest capture highlights ongoing efforts by authorities and licensed hunters to manage crocodile encounters and address safety concerns among nearby communities.
