Police have arrested two teenage boys believed to be involved in a robbery that caused injuries to an elderly person with disabilities (OKU) in Kuantan.
Kuantan District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Ashari Abu Samah said the incident took place at Kampung Darat Beserah on July 29, after which the victim lodged a police report.
He said both suspects, aged 16 and 17, were arrested following a raid in front of a house at Lorong Pelindung Damai 6.
“The arrests were made at about 7pm on July 30 following intelligence and information received by a team of officers and personnel from Beserah Police Station,” he said in a statement on Sunday.
Previously, a 40-second closed-circuit television (CCTV) recording believed to show the incident went viral on social media, drawing public criticism.
The footage showed a teenager wearing black allegedly attacking the OKU victim before dragging him away and escaping with his bag.
Ashari said checks found that the 17-year-old suspect had a previous record involving a drug-related offence and was still wanted for a case under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
He added that the 16-year-old suspect had no previous criminal record.
“Both suspects are currently being detained to assist investigations, while the investigation papers are being completed before being referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for further instructions,” he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code for robbery causing injury.
Ashari stressed that police take crimes targeting vulnerable groups, especially OKU individuals, seriously and will not compromise with those involved in such offences.
He also urged members of the public to provide any information related to criminal activities to assist police efforts in maintaining public safety and security.
