Kelantan police have urged Thai authorities to provide information or evidence if claims are true that suspects involved in a recent shooting which killed five Thai security personnel have fled into Malaysia.
Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the police have not received any intelligence confirming the allegation, adding that continuous monitoring by the Kelantan Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK) and all district police headquarters has not detected any movement of the suspects crossing into Malaysia.
“Every time there is a shooting or bomb attack in southern Thailand, claims often surface that the suspects have escaped to Malaysia.
“If the Thai authorities have credible information, they should share it with us so immediate action can be taken,” he told reporters after a coordination meeting between the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the Kelantan State Education Department (JPN) on Monday.
Mohd Yusoff said that since assuming his post in Kelantan, he has prioritised efforts to shut down illegal routes along the Malaysia-Thailand border to curb smuggling, cross-border crimes and the entry of wanted individuals.
He said tighter border controls should dispel claims that criminal suspects can easily flee into Malaysia.
The police chief also welcomed Thailand’s proposal to build a security fence spanning more than 90 kilometres along parts of the shared border, saying the move would strengthen border security for both countries.
Meanwhile, on the meeting with the Kelantan Education Department, Mohd Yusoff said both parties would enhance cooperation to address social issues involving students, including family-related factors and parental responsibilities, to ensure early and more effective intervention.
