Family Had Only Boys for 108 Years—A Girl Is Finally Coming

Date:

It’s a moment over a century in the making. For generations, the Sherman family of Montgomery County has welcomed only sons—until now. The family recently learned that a daughter is on the way, ending a 108-year streak of male births.

On Sunday, surrounded by family and friends, Montgomery County firefighter Michael Sherman and his wife, Joacquia Sherman, discovered they are expecting a baby girl.

“I just feel honored,” Sherman said. “We are the ones bringing the baby girl into the world. Finally, after over a hundred years. It’s amazing.”

The last girl in the Sherman family was Orah Belle Sherman, Michael’s great-great-aunt, born in 1917.

“She was a trailblazer in Atlanta,” Michael said. “She was involved in civil rights during that era, met many civil rights leaders, and made a real impact in the city.”

The family expressed excitement for the newest Sherman and the life she will lead.

“I love her. No matter what path she chooses, we will be with her,” said Michael’s grandmother, Lydia Robertson. “She will always have support here.”

The couple told ABC13 that the baby is due in March. They also plan to check if this unique family milestone might qualify for a Guinness World Record.
