A Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) candidate was detained by the Kedah National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) during a joint operation yesterday as he was returning from a holiday abroad.
The teenager allegedly shared cigarettes laced with the drug with his friends while partying in Thailand.
The 17-year-old Form Five student from a secondary school in Penang was arrested along with three friends aged 18 while riding two motorcycles. AADK tests showed all four were positive for ketamine.
Kedah AADK director Khairul Anwar Ahmad said the boy was stopped at the motorcycle lane of the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex in Bukit Kayu Hitam at 3.45 p.m. while on his way back to Penang after holidaying in Thailand since Saturday.
“Investigations found the teenager, an only child, has been living with his grandparents since his parents divorced when he was nine. He claimed he took the drug because of life pressures and curiosity, and admitted this was his second time trying the substance after a previous trip to Thailand,” Khairul Anwar said.
Overall, six individuals aged 17 to 19 were detained during the operation, which ran from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., after urine tests showed they were positive for drugs. The case is being investigated under Section 3(1) of the Drug Dependants (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983.
