The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) has foiled an attempt to smuggle chemical precursors believed to be used in drug production, worth nearly RM5 million, through the waters off Klebang, Melaka, two nights ago.
Melaka and Negeri Sembilan Maritime director Maritime Captain Salehuddin Zakaria said the seizure was the agency’s second success in efforts to curb the smuggling of drug-related materials through maritime routes.
He said an APMM patrol team discovered six boxes wrapped in black plastic along the Klebang beach at about 9.06pm.
“An inspection found 67 bottles containing chemical liquids believed to be used in the production of synthetic drugs,” he said in a statement today.
Salehuddin said the seized chemicals were estimated to be worth RM4.958 million on the black market, highlighting the scale of the attempted smuggling operation.
No arrests were made at the scene as the suspects were believed to have abandoned the materials after becoming aware of the authorities’ presence.
The seized items, discovered at about 9.30pm, were subsequently transported to the APMM Melaka and Negeri Sembilan state office before being handed over to investigating officers for further action.
The case is being investigated under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Poisons Act 1952 as it involves controlled chemicals allegedly misused for the production of dangerous drugs.
Salehuddin said APMM would continue strengthening patrols, intelligence operations and strategic cooperation with other security agencies to combat cross-border criminal activities.
He also urged coastal communities and fishermen to act as the authorities’ “eyes and ears” by reporting suspicious activities at sea through the 999 emergency line or the APMM Operations Centre, which operates around the clock.
