Three members of a family, including a 12-year-old girl, were killed after an Immigration Department truck crashed into them at the Maju Junction traffic light intersection along Jalan Sultan Ismail early this morning.
The incident, which occurred at around 1am, involved an Isuzu Black Maria truck belonging to the Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory Immigration Department. The truck first collided with a Proton Saga before losing control and crashing into four pedestrians and another vehicle.
Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said preliminary investigations found that the truck was driven by a 43-year-old local man, who was alone in the vehicle at the time.
“The truck was travelling from the Kuala Lumpur Immigration Office towards Chow Kit to collect detainees following an operation against undocumented migrants in the area.
“The truck is believed to have entered the junction when the traffic light was red, with its beacon lights and siren activated,” he said in a statement today.
At the same time, a Proton Saga driven by a 50-year-old local man was travelling straight through the junction when its traffic light was green.
The Proton Saga driver reportedly could not avoid the truck before both vehicles collided in the middle of the junction. The impact caused the Immigration Department truck to veer out of control before striking the four pedestrians, who were from the same family, as well as an Inokom Matrix that was stopped at the junction.
Three of the four pedestrians died at the scene. They were a 53-year-old man and his two daughters, aged 25 and 12.
The fourth victim, a 55-year-old woman who was the wife of the deceased man and mother of the two girls, sustained injuries to her head, right arm and both legs. She was rushed to the Red Zone of Kuala Lumpur Hospital for further treatment.
The three drivers involved in the crash were not injured.
Police detained both the Immigration Department truck driver and the Proton Saga driver to assist with investigations. Breathalyser tests and preliminary urine screenings for both men were negative for alcohol and drugs.
Police have also conducted investigations at the scene, obtained closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage, identified independent witnesses and sent the vehicles involved for further inspection.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the Jalan Tun H.S. Lee Traffic Police Station at 03-2071 9999 or the nearest police station.
