A 36-year-old businessman has been charged with voluntarily causing hurt to a Vietnamese woman who was allegedly assaulted at a club earlier this month.
Wangsa Maju police chief Assistant Commissioner Annas Sulaiman said police received a report regarding the incident on Aug 6 before opening an investigation under Sections 323 and 506 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt and criminal intimidation.
He said the investigation papers were referred to the deputy public prosecutor on Aug 11, who instructed that the accused be charged under Section 323.
“The accused, Tan Zhie Yang, was subsequently charged at the Jalan Duta Court on Aug 13,” Annas said in a statement.
The case came to light after Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng urged Bukit Aman to reopen investigations into the alleged assault involving 28-year-old Vietnamese woman Dao Thi Kim Tra at a club on Aug 4.
Dao claimed she was attacked by two men inside a VIP room, leaving her with injuries to her left eye, head and stomach. She also alleged that one of the men threatened her with a firearm.
She subsequently lodged a police report at the Wangsa Maju police station on Aug 6, claiming that only one suspect had been detained before being released two days later.
