Former Bangi MP Dr Ong Kian Ming has announced his resignation from the Democratic Action Party (DAP), effective today, August 31, 2026.
The former Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister said that while he would no longer be involved in politics as a party member, he remained committed to contributing to the country and working alongside people who share his interests and outlook.
Among his commitments is a pledge to support former Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin during the 16th General Election, should Khairy be given a seat to contest. Ong had made the promise on January 10 this year.
In a letter addressed to DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook and copied to national organising secretary Khoo Poay Tiong, Ong formally announced his resignation, which takes effect immediately.
Ong said he was grateful for the opportunities to contribute to both DAP and the country since joining the party in 2012. His political career included serving as the MP for Serdang from 2013 to 2018 and Bangi from 2018 to 2022, as well as Deputy Minister at MITI from 2018 to 2020.
He also served as an appointed member of the DAP Central Executive Committee from 2019 to 2022 and as an elected member of the DAP Selangor state committee from 2018 to 2024.
Looking back on his political journey, Ong thanked Tony Pua for inviting him to join DAP and for guiding him on how he could best contribute to the party and the country over the past 14 years.
He also expressed his appreciation to former DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng for giving him the opportunity to contest the Serdang and Bangi parliamentary seats and to serve as a deputy minister during Guan Eng’s tenure as party secretary-general.
Ong said he was also proud of having worked with DAP members and leaders in Serdang and Bangi throughout his time as an elected representative, adding that his focus had always been on serving voters and residents in both constituencies.
Despite leaving DAP, Ong said he had no plans to join another political party in the near future and did not intend to contest in the upcoming 16th General Election.
“I remain committed to fulfilling the promise I made on January 10, 2026, to help Khairy campaign in GE16, if he is given a seat to contest,” he said in a Facebook post on Monday.
Ong added that he would continue contributing to the country through other avenues, including his podcast, Are We OK, his various advisory roles and collaborations with like-minded individuals.
“Selamat Hari Merdeka,” he concluded.
