A Malaysian scuba diver who died after encountering strong currents while diving at Crystal Bay, Bali, had completed more than 50 dives and held a Rescue Diver certification.
Siti Nuraini Rusidi, 40, was in good health, well-rested and cheerful before entering the water on Wednesday, according to her friend Firdaus, who was also part of the dive.
Firdaus said Siti had previously dived at the same location three times and showed no signs of illness during the activity.
“She was healthy, well-rested and cheerful. She did not cough while diving,” he told Harian Metro.
The group became separated underwater after encountering strong currents and a large number of divers in the area, he said.
Firdaus only realised Siti was missing after he surfaced. Rescuers later told the group that she had panicked and struggled to breathe when the current became stronger, causing her breathing apparatus to come off.
A Divemaster reportedly found Siti struggling to breathe, ended her dive and brought her to the surface.
Firdaus said Siti was semi-conscious when she reached the surface, with foam coming from her mouth and nose.
“Boat crew members and fellow divers immediately performed CPR continuously, but she was pronounced dead upon arrival at a nearby clinic,” he said.
Siti’s remains have been taken to Bali Mandara Regional General Hospital (RSUD Bali Mandara), where a post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out.
Nusa Penida police have also recorded statements from witnesses, rescuers and Siti’s friends as part of their investigation.
Firdaus said the Malaysian Embassy was aware of the incident, while Siti’s remains were expected to be repatriated within three to five working days, subject to the post-mortem and police investigation.
“We also hope the process of bringing her remains home can be expedited,” he said.
Earlier, local news portal BaliNews reported that a Malaysian diver was believed to have died after encountering strong currents at Crystal Bay at about 11.10am local time on Wednesday.
Siti had begun the recreational dive at around 8am with a Divemaster, boat captain and several other divers in the area.
