A Penang rental listing allegedly offering a makeshift sleeping space in a living room for RM280 a month has sparked criticism online, with Malaysians questioning the lack of privacy and comfort.
According to BuzzKini, the property in Batu Kawan drew attention after a netizen shared photos showing a living room divided into sleeping areas using orange and white office partitions.
The photos, along with screenshots of a conversation with someone believed to be the landlord, showed a single bed and mattress placed behind the partitions near the entrance and staircase.
Unlike a proper bedroom, the makeshift space had no full walls or door, leaving the sleeping area exposed to other occupants using the shared living room.
The arrangement prompted criticism from Malaysians, with many questioning how tenants could enjoy privacy or adequate rest in such a setup.
Some pointed out that other occupants could easily walk past the sleeping area, while another raised concerns about tenants being unable to switch off the lights if others were still using the living room at night.
Others argued that landlords should provide more suitable living conditions rather than converting shared spaces into makeshift bedrooms.
However, the authenticity of the alleged rental listing has not been independently verified, and it remains unclear whether the space was genuinely being offered for rent as described.
