Melaka Gig Death Probe Reclassified As Murder After Delivery Rider Dies

Date:

A 21-year-old delivery rider has died after suffering a serious head injury while attending a gig at a cafe in Kampung Jawa, Melaka, last week.

Melaka Tengah police chief Assistant Commissioner Halim Abas said the victim had been receiving treatment at Melaka Hospital since October 17 and was placed in the intensive care unit (ICU) before dying at 3.53pm on October 21.

Following the incident, police arrested 10 suspects, aged between 18 and 25, to assist in the investigation.

Halim said the event had not obtained a police permit or approval from the local authority.

The case, initially investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt, has since been reclassified under Section 302 for murder.

He added that investigations were ongoing.

Earlier, claims circulated on Threads that someone had died while attending the event, with users questioning why the cafe continued operating as usual.

However, the cafe’s management denied that the victim had died at its premises, explaining that he passed away in hospital while receiving treatment after a fall.

The management also said its representatives had visited the police station several times to provide statements and assist with the investigation.

“The cafe was not the location of the alleged crime, so why should it be closed? For your information, our premises were closed on Sunday (October 18) to allow police to conduct their investigation,” the management said in a comment on Threads.

It added that police had allowed the cafe to resume normal operations after completing their investigation at the premises.
