Malaysia is expected to enter the Northeast Monsoon on Tuesday, with the season set to continue until March next year.
Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said winds during the monsoon typically blow consistently from the northeast.
During the initial phase from November to January 2027, three to five episodes of prolonged heavy rain are expected, potentially triggering floods in riverside and low-lying areas.
Strong, persistent northeasterly winds could also cause rough seas and raise sea levels in the South China Sea, he said in a statement.
As the monsoon enters its final phase from January to March next year, rainfall is expected to decrease, particularly in the northern states of Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah.
Mohd Hisham warned that the drier conditions could bring hot weather and potentially more extreme heatwaves, influenced by the ongoing very strong El Niño phenomenon.
He urged the public to prepare for changing weather conditions throughout the monsoon season.
The public was also advised to monitor forecasts, weather advisories and warnings issued by MetMalaysia through its official website, the myCuaca mobile app, official social media channels or its hotline at 1-300-22-1638.
