Motorists will enjoy a 50% toll discount for two days in conjunction with Deepavali, with the government setting aside RM20.11 million to compensate participating highway concessionaires.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the discount would begin at midnight this Friday and remain in effect until 11.59pm on Saturday.
The initiative applies to Class 1 private vehicles at all toll plazas, as well as Class 2 vehicles using the Penang Bridge.
However, the discount will not cover border toll plazas, including the Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI) toll plaza on the North-South Expressway and the Tanjung Kupang toll plaza on the Malaysia-Singapore Second Link.
In a statement on Thursday, Nanta said the initiative reflected the government’s continued commitment to protecting the welfare and well-being of the people.
He added that the discount was expected to reduce travel expenses, particularly for Hindus travelling back to their hometowns or visiting family members to celebrate Deepavali.
Motorists have been advised to plan their journeys early to avoid traffic congestion.
They should also ensure their Touch ‘n Go cards or eWallets have sufficient balance, comply with speed limits, keep a safe distance from other vehicles and take adequate breaks to prevent driver fatigue.
The public is also encouraged to check the latest traffic updates and highway incident reports through the Malaysian Highway Authority’s official channels before travelling.
