Malaysia is set to receive a new pair of giant pandas in mid-November, Deputy Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii announced today.
Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat, Huang said the panda loan project with China will continue under a fresh 10-year agreement signed on April 16 during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Malaysia.
“This renewed agreement allows Malaysia to host a younger pair of giant pandas from 2025 to 2035,” he said, highlighting that the collaboration reflects strong bilateral ties and shared conservation goals between the two countries.
The previous pair, Fu Wa (Xing Xing) and Feng Yi (Liang Liang), were loaned to Malaysia in 2014 and became beloved attractions at Zoo Negara. They were returned to China on May 18 after completing their 11-year stay.
Huang added that both governments were pleased with the warm reception Malaysians gave the pandas, which have become a symbol of China–Malaysia friendship.
The new pandas, expected to arrive at Zoo Negara next week, will participate in ongoing research on panda protection and breeding as part of the conservation partnership.
