12 More Bodies From Border Boat Tragedy Sent To Hospital In Alor Setar

Date:

A total of 12 bodies from the boat tragedy in Malaysian–Thai border waters were sent to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital (HSB) in Alor Setar this morning.

Langkawi District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Khairul Azhar Nuruddin said the remains consist of 10 adult men, one boy and one girl.

“Previously, we sent 12 bodies to HSB on Tuesday, followed by another four at 3pm yesterday. All of those have undergone post-mortem examinations. The 12 bodies sent today are expected to be examined today and tomorrow,” he told reporters.

With the transfer, there are no more bodies from the incident at Hospital Sultanah Maliha (HSM) in Langkawi. A meeting with the state Islamic religious authorities is expected to be held tomorrow to determine the next steps, including burial arrangements.

Khairul Azhar also confirmed that all 14 survivors rescued from the incident remain under police custody for further investigation.

Earlier today, the 12 bodies were transported from HSM via a police truck to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) jetty in Bukit Malut, arriving at 7.20am. They were then taken to Kuala Perlis by a Marine Police boat before being transported to HSB.

To date, 28 victims—believed to be Rohingya refugees—have been found dead, while 14 survivors were rescued after a boat carrying an estimated 70 undocumented migrants capsized in border waters.
