Police have opened an investigation paper into a case involving the alleged abuse of a cat at a restaurant in Taman Melor, near Teluk Intan, which went viral on social media recently.
In a broader context, authorities have reiterated that animal cruelty cases will not be taken lightly, especially when incidents are widely circulated online and draw public concern.
The one-minute-32-second video shows a man, believed to be a restaurant worker, placing a cat into a sack.
Hilir Perak district police chief Assistant Commissioner Chua Kok Lian said police began initial investigations following the viral clip to identify those involved, the exact location, and gather complete facts on the incident.
He said police also received a report lodged by the restaurant owner regarding the viral video.
Based on the report, the worker is believed to be the individual seen placing the cat into the sack as shown in the footage.
The case is being investigated under Section 29 of the Animal Welfare Act 2015 for alleged animal abuse.
Police are also working with the Veterinary Services Department and other relevant agencies to complete investigations and take appropriate action.
Authorities have urged the public to report any cases of animal cruelty, stressing that strict action will be taken against offenders.
