Man Gets Three Months’ Jail For Death Threat Against Aunt

Date:

A fisherman was sentenced to three months in jail by the Ayer Keroh Magistrate’s Court after admitting to threatening to dismember and kill his elderly aunt.

In a broader context, courts continue to take a firm stance against criminal intimidation cases, particularly those involving threats of violence against family members.

Mohamad Yusri Yahaya, 57, pleaded guilty immediately after the charge was read before Magistrate Sharda Shienha Mohd Suleiman on Thursday.

According to the charge, the accused intentionally issued a criminal threat against his 73-year-old aunt at Batu 9, Pantai Kundur, Tanjung Kling, at about 10am on May 4.

He was accused of threatening to chop up and kill the victim, an offence under Section 506 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of seven years, a fine, or both upon conviction.

Based on the facts of the case, the accused was reportedly upset after being reprimanded by his aunt over his alleged drug abuse.

He later went to the victim’s house carrying an iron rod and allegedly threatened to dismember and kill her.

The defence appealed for a lighter sentence, informing the court that the accused is a widower supporting three children and earns about RM1,000 a month as a fisherman.

However, the prosecution sought an appropriate sentence in view of the seriousness of the offence.

The court subsequently sentenced Mohamad Yusri to three months’ imprisonment, effective from the date of his arrest on May 4.
