Lecturer Goes Viral After Refusing To Help Cover Student Fees Following Past Unpaid Debt

Date:

A Malaysian lecturer has gone viral after sharing her experience of being asked to financially assist students, only to later be left unpaid, prompting her to advise others on the importance of setting boundaries when helping others.

In a post circulating on Threads, the educator said she was recently contacted by a parent of a current student requesting her to cover a programme fee upfront due to financial difficulties.

The lecturer explained that the request brought back a previous incident where she had helped two students pay their fees in advance several years ago, but never received repayment.

She claimed that despite covering their costs for two semesters, the students eventually stopped responding and even blocked her, leaving the debt unresolved.

According to her, both individuals have since graduated and are now employed, but efforts to recover the money have been unsuccessful.

In the recent case, the parent reportedly assured her that repayment would be made once the salary was credited, asking her to pay the fees first.

However, the lecturer refused the request, stating that she was unable to provide financial assistance this time, and the matter was not pursued further.

The incident has since sparked widespread discussion online, with many social media users praising her decision to decline the request.

Netizens said the situation highlights the importance of protecting personal finances, even when helping students or others in need.

The lecturer also used the opportunity to remind others in similar positions to be cautious and ensure that goodwill does not result in personal financial loss.
