Pop star Britney Spears has voluntarily checked into a substance abuse treatment facility, just over a month after she was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, according to her representative.
In an email to The Associated Press on Sunday (April 12), her representative confirmed that the 44-year-old singer had entered treatment on her own accord.
The development comes after an incident on March 5, when California Highway Patrol officers responded to reports of a BMW driving erratically along US Highway 101 in Ventura County near the Los Angeles County line.
Authorities said Spears, who resides in the area, underwent field sobriety tests before being arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of a combination of alcohol and drugs. She was taken to a county jail and released several hours later.
The case was later submitted to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office on March 23 for review, with prosecutors expected to decide on possible charges ahead of a May 4 court date.
At the time, a representative described her alleged actions as “completely inexcusable” and said it could mark the beginning of “long overdue change” in her life.
Spears has largely stepped back from her music career in recent years, having not toured for nearly eight years and not released a new album in almost a decade.
In 2021, she regained control of her personal and financial affairs after the termination of a court-ordered conservatorship that had lasted nearly 14 years. She later released a bestselling memoir, The Woman In Me, in 2023.
