RM Of BTS Faces Backlash Over Alleged Smoking In Tokyo No-Smoking Zone And Littering

Date:

BTS member RM has found himself at the centre of controversy following reports from Japanese media alleging he smoked and discarded cigarette butts in a designated non-smoking area during his stay in Tokyo.

According to reports published by Japanese weekly magazine Shukan Bunshun, RM was allegedly seen multiple times smoking in a non-smoking zone around Shibuya while in Japan for the group’s world tour activities.

The report claimed that RM spent time with acquaintances visiting izakayas and bars, and was also seen moving between venues late at night. It further alleged that despite the lack of designated smoking areas inside certain establishments, he and his group were smoking in building corridors and leaving cigarette butts on site.

Photographs and detailed descriptions were published alongside the report, with claims that a security guard had at one point issued a warning. A female staff member was also reportedly seen cleaning up cigarette butts left behind.

Smoking regulations in Japan are strictly enforced, particularly in areas such as Shibuya where many streets are designated as non-smoking zones, with limited and clearly marked smoking areas provided. Violations are generally treated seriously due to concerns over public nuisance.

Following the report, reactions online have been mixed. Some fans defended RM, saying the matter relates to his private time off, while others criticised the alleged behaviour and stressed the importance of respecting local laws and regulations.

At present, RM’s agency BigHit Music has not issued any official statement regarding the allegations.

The reports come shortly after BTS held concerts at Tokyo Dome on April 17 and 18 as part of their “ARIRANG” world tour. The group is expected to continue their tour in the United States, with upcoming performances scheduled in Tampa, Florida, later this month.
