A 14-year-old boy tragically died after being accidentally shot with a homemade shotgun while playing hide-and-seek in Keningau, Sabah, yesterday morning.
Keningau police chief Yampil Anak Garai said the victim’s friend, also 14, had jokingly asked for the firearm, locally known as a bakakuk, before the fatal accident. The victim was hiding under the house when the gun was accidentally fired.
Villagers rushed the boy to the hospital, but he was pronounced dead at the emergency unit. Doctors found 14 gunshot wounds across his chest, arm, knee, and torso.
Police later discovered that the suspect’s 13-year-old brother had hidden the shotgun, which belonged to their 70-year-old father. All three family members have been detained, and authorities seized the shotgun, ammunition, spent casings, the suspect’s clothing, and two mobile phones.
The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
