A video showing a confrontation involving a Chinese national allegedly smoking in a non-smoking zone in Johor has gone viral on social media, sparking heated reactions online.
According to a video shared by a Chinese Malaysian netizen, the incident is believed to have taken place at a waterfront commercial area in Johor Bahru.
The uploader claimed he first noticed the man smoking while passing through the area and was shocked to see him still smoking when he returned later.
He alleged that the location was both a non-smoking and no-alcohol zone, questioning why the individual could not respect local rules and public spaces.
The situation escalated after a Malay woman reportedly approached the man and calmly advised him in Mandarin that smoking was not allowed there.
However, instead of cooperating, the man allegedly became aggressive and loudly questioned why he was not allowed to smoke.
Video footage showed the woman remaining composed while responding: “Why are you scolding me? I’m speaking to you nicely. Smoking is not allowed here.”
A Chinese Malaysian man then stepped in to help de-escalate the situation, but the smoker allegedly became upset after noticing he was being recorded.
The man was then seen allegedly pushing and shoving the person filming the incident while complaining about “portrait rights” and being recorded on camera.
The netizen who uploaded the video said he chose to record the encounter for his own safety and criticised the smoker’s behaviour.
“People were advising you nicely, but you still wanted to use violence?” he wrote in the post.
He also praised the Malay woman for her calm and respectful handling of the confrontation and thanked security personnel who later stepped in to assist.
The viral clip has since triggered widespread discussion online, with many netizens applauding the woman’s ability to communicate in Mandarin while calmly standing her ground during the tense exchange.
