A 16-year-old boy was killed after the car he was driving collided with a four-wheel drive vehicle in an accident at Jalan Bukit Payong on Thursday.
The crash occurred around noon and resulted in the victim, identified as Muhammad Azmil Hakimi Abdullah from Kampung Bukit Payong, Jerteh, dying at the scene due to severe injuries.
Besut deputy police chief Deputy Superintendent Md Sani Md Saleh said initial investigations found that the 4×4 driver tested positive for ketamine after a preliminary urine screening, indicating he was under the influence of drugs.
Police said they received information about the two-vehicle crash from the public before deploying officers to the scene.
According to him, the accident is believed to have happened when the victim was driving in his lane and noticed an oncoming 4×4 vehicle being driven in a swerving manner.
“The 4×4 vehicle suddenly veered into the victim’s lane. The victim attempted to avoid the collision by moving into the opposite lane, but the 4×4 then re-entered its original lane, resulting in a head-on collision,” he said in a statement.
The victim’s body was sent to Besut Hospital for post-mortem, while the suspect was taken to the district Narcotics Investigation Department for further action.
The 4×4 driver has been detained under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, while the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Police are also urging witnesses to come forward to assist investigations.
