A woman has come forward to share her regret after lending a man a total of RMB 56,000 (about MYR 24,000) following a series of online interactions. The 28-year-old, who worked as a live-stream host last year, said the man frequently “sent gifts” during her broadcasts, earning her over RMB 3,000 (MYR 1,200) in just one week. One day, the man told her he was feeling down and asked to meet in person. Feeling pressured to maintain his support, she agreed to meet him.
According to Chinese media reports, the initial in-person meeting led to a closer relationship, after which the man began borrowing money from her, claiming it was for business investments. He borrowed RMB 10,000 (MYR 4,000) initially, followed by RMB 25,000 and RMB 21,000, totaling RMB 56,000 (MYR 24,000). However, after borrowing the funds, the man disappeared and could not be contacted, leaving the woman no choice but to take legal action.
The court has ordered the man to repay the principal along with interest, bringing the total repayment to RMB 60,000 (MYR 25,000). The woman expressed deep regret, stating she now works 12-hour days to repay the debt and lamented that “if I weren’t in this industry, I wouldn’t owe so much money.” She also warned others to be cautious about lending money to online acquaintances without fully understanding their situation, emphasizing the risk of being scammed.
