Malaysian Hip Hop Group Withdraws from Boiler Room KL Citing Ethical Concerns Over Investor Links to Israel

Date:

Malaysian hip hop collective 0108 Slatan has pulled out of tonight’s inaugural Boiler Room Kuala Lumpur event, citing ethical concerns over the platform’s ownership.

The group announced their withdrawal in a statement on Instagram, explaining that their decision was driven by public concerns regarding the involvement of Boiler Room’s parent company, Superstruct Entertainment, which was acquired in June 2024 by global investment firm KKR.

KKR has reportedly made substantial investments in Israeli tech, data and weapons companies. 0108 Slatan said feedback from fans, industry peers and board members influenced their decision to step away from the event.

“0108 Slatan remains committed to our community and accountability,” the group wrote. They acknowledged that cultural platforms are shaped not only by artists but also by audiences, adding that their move reflects responsibility toward their supporters and the wider public sentiment.

The group stressed that their withdrawal is not a criticism of the local organiser or Malaysian collaborators, emphasizing continued respect for those working to support the local music industry. “Our decision is driven fully by the ethical and social concerns raised by our fans and our community,” they said.

Boiler Room, founded in 2010, is known globally for streaming intimate, live DJ and artist performances, featuring names such as Charli XCX, Skrillex, Fred Again, Peggy Gou and others. The KL edition, titled Boiler Room Kuala Lumpur: Kelab Durian, was set as an invite-only event with performances by Shelhiel, DJ Jax Jones, I-SKY, Northern Anthem, DJ Kotex Lembu and otakotak.

In parallel, activist group BDS Malaysia has called for a boycott of the event. Several bars and venues in Kampung Attap — including fono, Triptyk and Scream Bloody Bar — are hosting an alternative show titled Spoiler Room Kuala Lumpur tonight.

The parallel event features bass-heavy and experimental electronic music at fono, an eclectic mix of house and deep techno at Triptyk, and an unannounced act at Scream Bloody Bar. Entry is set at a minimum of RM15, with proceeds going to the Shamia family fundraiser in support of a displaced family from Gaza affected repeatedly since October 7.

0108 Slatan said their choice reflects differing responsibilities within the artistic ecosystem, and urged the move to be viewed not as rejection, but as a response to urgent ethical concerns.
