The Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) has issued a thunderstorm warning with heavy rain and strong winds expected across seven states until tonight.
In a Facebook post, METMalaysia said the affected areas include Kedah (Sik and Baling), Kelantan (Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Kota Bharu, Jeli, Tanah Merah, Bachok, Machang and Pasir Puteh), and Terengganu (Besut and Setiu).
It added that in Negeri Sembilan, the affected districts are Jelebu, Kuala Pilah, Jempol and Tampin, while in Johor, areas including Tangkak, Segamat, Muar, Batu Pahat, Kluang, Mersing and Kota Tinggi are also expected to experience adverse weather conditions.
General weather patterns in the region during this period often bring sudden thunderstorms, especially during inter-monsoon transitions, increasing the risk of flash floods and strong winds in low-lying areas.
In Sarawak, the affected areas include Sibu, Mukah (Matu, Dalat and Mukah), Kapit (Song and Kapit), Bintulu (Tatau) and Miri (Subis, Beluru, Miri and Marudi), while in Sabah, the Interior (Tambunan), West Coast, Sandakan (Telupid, Kinabatangan, Beluran and Sandakan) and Kudat (Kota Marudu) are also on alert.
METMalaysia said the warning is issued when thunderstorms with rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour are detected or expected to last for more than an hour.
It added that thunderstorm warnings are short-term alerts, typically valid for no more than six hours per issuance, and are updated as weather conditions change.
