Motorcycle Trip Turns Tragic As 14-Year-Old Boy Drowns During Beach Outing With Father

Date:

A holiday outing turned into tragedy when a 14-year-old boy drowned while swimming at a popular beach in southern Thailand, despite desperate rescue efforts that also placed rescuers at risk.

Thung Wua Laen Beach in Pathiu district became the scene of the incident on May 3, 2026, after authorities received an emergency report of a drowning case involving a teenage boy.

Police said the boy had been travelling with his 38-year-old father from Saraburi on a motorcycle trip during the school break. The pair had stopped in Chumphon to visit relatives and enjoy several beaches in the area.

According to the father, the two were swimming when he told his son to return to shore, but the boy insisted on staying in the water. Moments later, he lost sight of him and immediately called for help.

Rescue teams, including local emergency units and volunteers, rushed to the scene and began searching the waters. The boy was found about 20 minutes later at a depth of 2–3 metres and was pulled ashore for CPR.

Although responders managed to restore his pulse temporarily, the teenager remained unconscious and was rushed to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead despite continued medical efforts.

A rescue volunteer involved in the operation said strong underwater currents made the search extremely dangerous, with some rescuers nearly losing consciousness during the effort.

Authorities have since reminded the public that even seemingly calm waters can conceal strong currents and hidden channels, urging swimmers—especially children—to remain in designated safe zones at all times.
