A 26-year-old man has been arrested in a drug bust conducted by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) of the Royal Malaysia Police Sarawak Contingent Headquarters in Jalan Song on Monday.
Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the suspect was detained at about 12.30pm in front of a hotel during an operation carried out by police personnel.
He said checks on the suspect led to the seizure of suspected ketamine weighing 5.42g, with an estimated street value of RM600.
Initial urine screening tests also returned positive results for amphetamine, methamphetamine, ketamine and benzodiazepines.
Police said the suspect had no prior criminal record based on background checks.
The case is being investigated under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a jail term of between two and five years, as well as whipping upon conviction.
The suspect has been remanded for four days from May 27 to May 30 to assist in investigations under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
Police reiterated that drug-related offences, including possession and distribution, are serious crimes under the law.
Authorities also stressed their continued commitment to combating drug abuse and trafficking to protect current and future generations.
