Perak is preparing to introduce a ban on the sale of vape products as part of efforts to protect public health, especially among the younger generation.
State executive councillor A Sivanesan said a policy paper on the matter will be tabled at the state executive council meeting on Monday. The proposal focuses on halting the issuance of vape sales licences by local authorities, which fall under the state’s jurisdiction.
“We are only banning the sale of vape because licences are issued by local authorities, which fall under our jurisdiction. Personally, I hope it will be approved,” Sivanesan told Utusan Malaysia.
If the policy is adopted, Perak would become the fifth state to restrict vape sales this year, following Perlis, Terengganu, Kedah and Pahang. Johor and Kelantan had already imposed similar bans in 2016 and 2015 respectively.
At the federal level, Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad said last week that his ministry is drafting a Cabinet memorandum proposing a nationwide vape ban.
