Authorities in Phuket have revealed preliminary findings into a parasailing accident in which a tourist was thrown into the sea after the tow rope snapped during take-off at Kamala Beach on April 20, 2026.
The incident, which occurred in the Kathu district, sparked widespread concern online after video footage showed the parasailing line breaking mid-air as the activity was starting. Both the tourist and the operator fell into the water following the sudden failure of the equipment.
Following the accident, local police, marine officials, and relevant port authorities conducted a joint inspection of parasailing operators in the area on April 22. Checks included business licences, crew documentation, and drug screening tests, with authorities reporting no illegal substances or violations detected among operators at the time.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the accident was caused when the parasailing tow rope became entangled with the boat’s propeller, leading to the rope snapping during launch. This resulted in the passenger losing support and falling into the sea.
Authorities have since held discussions with relevant agencies to review safety procedures and strengthen preventive measures to avoid similar incidents in the future. The Phuket Port Authority has also been instructed to carry out a detailed investigation into the boat crew’s compliance with regulations, with legal action to follow if any breaches are identified.
