Security Guard Jailed 7 Years for Stealing RM250k Worth of Jewellery from Melaka Finance Officer

Date:

A 35-year-old security guard has been sentenced to seven years in prison for stealing and selling gold and diamond jewellery worth more than RM250,000 belonging to the Melaka state financial officer.

Mohd Zakuan Abdul Rashid was convicted in the Melaka Sessions Court after pleading guilty to two charges — theft and dealing in stolen property.

Judge Raja Noor Adilla Raja Mahyaldin sentenced him to three years’ jail for theft under Section 380 of the Penal Code and seven years for dealing in stolen property under Section 413. The sentences will run concurrently from the date of his arrest on Jan 6, meaning he will serve seven years in total.

Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Asri Abd Rahman Sidik urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence, stressing that the crime involved a serious breach of trust.

He said Mohd Zakuan had been employed as a security guard at the victim’s official residence since 2024 and was entrusted to protect both the property and its owner, a senior Melaka state official.

Describing the accused as “a fence that eats the paddy it is meant to protect”, Asri said the public interest and the large financial loss of more than RM250,000 justified a heavy sentence.

Mohd Zakuan, who was not represented by a lawyer, asked the court for leniency, saying he needed to look after his father.

According to the case facts, Mohd Zakuan stole RM20 in cash, a gold bracelet, two diamond rings, two diamond bracelets and 17 gold bars weighing about 86 grams from the home of Datuk Salhah Salleh, 53.

The thefts took place at her official residence in Bukit Peringgit between June 2024 and December 2025.

He also admitted to selling the stolen jewellery and gold bars at a location in Kampung Paya Rumput during the same period, despite knowing they were stolen.
