Teen Stabbing in Petaling Jaya Linked to Video Games and Social Media Influence

Date:

The influence of video games and certain social media content is being examined in the investigation of a deadly stabbing involving a teenage boy at a school in Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya, on Tuesday.

Selangor Police Chief, Datuk Shazeli Kahar, said the probe is currently focusing on social media platforms believed to have influenced the 14-year-old suspect’s actions.

“Previously, I mentioned that the suspect was influenced by social media. These platforms are vast, so we need space to determine which medium truly affected him. We also do not rule out the possibility that video games may have motivated the suspect’s actions,” he said during a press conference at the Walkabout Program with Little India Entrepreneurs in conjunction with Deepavali at Jalan Tengku Kelana on Thursday.

Shazeli added that police are reviewing all aspects of the case, including possible motives and external influences that may have prompted the suspect’s behavior. He noted that the suspect wearing gloves before the incident is believed to be part of premeditated planning.

“Police will continue to gather comprehensive evidence to ensure the investigation’s findings are conclusive and to assist in providing recommendations to the Public Prosecutor,” he said.

So far, statements have been recorded from 59 individuals, including the suspect’s friends, teachers, and family members of both the suspect and the victim.

Earlier, a handwritten note believed to be from the suspect went viral online, containing terms such as “Zero Day” and “NPC (Non-Player Character),” which are commonly associated with video games.
