Sometimes love stories don’t unfold the way we imagine. An Indian vlogger recently made headlines after flying nearly 5,000 kilometres to Indonesia, hoping to turn his online friendship with a local woman into marriage — only to be rejected on the spot.
The vlogger had spent months chatting with the woman online and believed their bond was strong enough to take things further. Convinced it was fate, he travelled all the way to meet her in person. Their first encounter went smoothly, and she welcomed him as a friend — but things took a surprising turn when he suddenly pulled out a ring and proposed.
Caught off guard, the woman quickly said “no.” According to the vlogger, her rejection was not out of dislike, but due to cultural traditions. She is believed to be from the Baduy tribe, an indigenous Indonesian community with strict marriage customs. While some women from the Outer Baduy do marry outsiders, most still follow traditional practices of marrying within their community.
The story sparked mixed reactions online. Some praised the vlogger’s bravery for taking such a bold step, while others criticised him for being unrealistic and rushing into a proposal with someone he had only known through social media. As one netizen put it — grand gestures may look romantic, but they can’t replace genuine understanding and compatibility.
