A customer in Guilin, Guangxi, was left shocked after allegedly finding a cigarette butt in his bowl of rice noodles before spotting a rat running through the restaurant’s kitchen.
The incident took place on July 22 at a noodle shop in Qixing District, where the customer, identified only as Mr Hu, had ordered a bowl of Guilin rice noodles for 10 yuan.
Mr Hu said he first discovered what appeared to be a cigarette butt in his noodles. Moments later, he claimed he saw a rat scurrying around inside the restaurant’s kitchen.
According to Mr Hu, the restaurant only offered to replace his meal and did not provide a refund or any compensation.
He also alleged that while the restaurant admitted there had been a rat in the kitchen, it denied that the cigarette butt had come from the bowl of noodles.
When contacted by local media, the owner of Yanfu Big Bowl Noodles said the restaurant had already carried out corrective measures but declined to comment further on the incident.
Mr Hu has since lodged a complaint through China’s 12315 consumer complaint hotline, while authorities from the Qixing District Market Supervision Bureau have launched an investigation into the matter.
