An Indian Air Force (IAF) Antonov AN-32 transport aircraft has crashed and burst into flames within the premises of an Air Force Station in Jorhat, Assam, on Saturday morning.
Preliminary reports indicate the aircraft went down during its landing approach at the military base, triggering a fire upon impact.
Emergency response teams were immediately deployed to the scene to bring the blaze under control and carry out initial assessments of the situation.
The Indian Air Force has confirmed the incident and said a detailed investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the crash.
Authorities have yet to confirm the number of casualties or whether there were any injuries resulting from the incident.
The state government of Assam said it is awaiting a full report from the military before providing further details.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the authorities were informed of the crash and are closely monitoring developments as updates are expected from the Air Force.
The AN-32 is a twin-engine transport aircraft widely used by the Indian Air Force for logistics operations and missions to remote and difficult-to-access areas.
The aircraft is capable of carrying up to 7.5 tonnes of cargo or around 50 passengers, and is frequently deployed in mountainous and isolated regions.
The incident comes months after another military aviation tragedy in Assam involving a Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jet crash that killed two pilots, raising renewed concerns over operational safety in the region.
Military authorities are continuing investigations to establish the exact cause of the latest AN-32 crash.
