An Indonesian man allegedly set his father on fire after reportedly struggling to cope emotionally with his ex-wife’s remarriage.
The incident took place on Friday night in Jalan Pinang Baris, Gang Wakaf II, Medan, North Sumatra.
The 66-year-old victim, identified only by the initials YL, was rescued before the flames could engulf his entire body. He suffered burn injuries to his hands and legs.
The suspect, identified as EP, 39, is believed to have been under emotional distress following his separation from his former wife.
Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit at the Medan Sunggal Police Station, Inspector Herman Sentosa, said police received a report about the incident at around 10pm local time.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect was emotionally distressed after his ex-wife remarried. As a result, he became unable to control his emotions, and his father became the target,” Herman was quoted as saying by local media on Saturday.
The suspect has been detained at the Medan Sunggal Police Station to assist with investigations.
However, Herman said police have yet to formally name EP as a criminal suspect as they are still awaiting an official police report from the victim or his family.
“So far, no police report has been lodged by the victim or family members. The suspect remains in custody to assist with investigations,” he said.
Before police arrived, local residents reportedly detained the suspect and prevented an angry crowd from attacking him.
Police are continuing their investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
