The Philippines has temporarily blocked the gaming application Gorebox following an initial investigation into a rare school shooting in which a teenage suspect was found to have played the game.
The incident took place in Tacloban, south-east of Manila, where three students were killed and 20 others injured after two suspects aged 15 and 14 allegedly opened fire inside a classroom on Monday.
Authorities said the decision to restrict access to the game was made after early findings suggested the younger suspect had engaged with Gorebox, a first-person shooter title known for its violent gameplay and “unrestrained destruction” features as described in its official listing.
Cybersecurity officials stated that online influences are being examined as part of the broader investigation, adding that temporarily blocking the game would allow authorities to assess whether it had any role in the incident.
The Cybercrime Investigation and Co-ordinating Centre said the move was precautionary while the case is being reviewed, stressing the need to understand any possible digital factors behind the tragedy.
Police also confirmed that the 14-year-old suspect is too young to face charges under Philippine law, while the 15-year-old has been charged with murder. Investigators further alleged that both suspects had indicated experiences of bullying prior to the attack.
Officials revealed that firearms used in the shooting were traced to family members, including a police officer and a licensed security agency worker, raising concerns over weapon access and storage.
Authorities also said preliminary findings suggest the attack may have been premeditated, with reports indicating the suspects had isolated themselves inside a school bathroom before carrying out the shooting.
The incident has reignited national debate over youth exposure to violent online content, with lawmakers calling for stricter controls on firearm access and closer monitoring of digital platforms used by minors.
Education and security officials have also warned about the potential influence of online media on vulnerable youths, although studies globally have yet to establish a direct link between video games and real-world violent behaviour.
The shooting, which shocked the nation, stands out not only for its severity but also because both suspects are minors, prompting renewed scrutiny of school safety measures and digital consumption among children.
