Malaysia Confirms Acquisition Of French CAESAR 155mm Artillery System

Date:

The Ministry of Defence has confirmed Malaysia’s acquisition of the CAESAR 155mm self-propelled howitzer (SPH) from France as part of efforts to strengthen the nation’s artillery capabilities.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the new asset will significantly enhance the firepower and operational readiness of the country’s armed forces, marking another key addition to Malaysia’s military inventory.

“We confirm and have agreed to the acquisition. It will be another asset added to our armament,” he told reporters after launching the National Defence Strategic Plan (PSPN) 2026–2030 and the Defence Capacity Framework (RTKP) 2026–2030.

He added that details on the delivery timeline for the first batch will be announced later, while stressing there was no attempt to withhold information regarding the procurement process.

“We have nothing to hide,” he said.

Previously, the Ministry of Finance had approved the acquisition in 2024, although the Defence Ministry was instructed to renegotiate pricing before finalisation of the deal.

A RM50 million allocation was set aside under the first phase of procurement in November 2025, with the process expected to be concluded this year.

Malaysia is reported to be the 15th country to acquire the CAESAR system, which is capable of firing six rounds in under one minute at a range of up to 40 kilometres. The system can also reposition within less than two and a half minutes, enhancing battlefield mobility.

European defence company KNDS stated that the order for 18 CAESAR units in regimental configuration will further strengthen the capabilities of the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM).
