A total of 2,669 counterfeit football jerseys worth RM135,000 were seized during raids conducted at three premises in Johor Bahru and Kota Tinggi on Thursday.
Johor Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) director Lilis Saslinda Pornomo said the premises were found to be selling various football team jerseys displaying trademarks belonging to well-known brands without approval from registered trademark owners.
She said the raids were carried out following intelligence gathering and public complaints regarding the sale of counterfeit goods, particularly ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup season.
“Initial inspections and verification by representatives of the complainants found reasonable grounds to believe that an offence under Section 102(1)(c) of the Trademarks Act 2019 [Act 815] had been committed.
“The offence involves possessing, keeping or controlling goods for trade purposes that unlawfully use registered trademarks,” she said in a statement on Friday.
Lilis said three local individuals, comprising the premises owners and operators, were also detained to assist investigations into the suspected counterfeit goods operation.
She added that all three premises are being investigated under the same Act.
If convicted, offenders may face a maximum fine of RM10,000 for each counterfeit item or imprisonment of up to three years, or both, for a first offence.
KPDN Johor said it will continue monitoring and taking action against the sale and distribution of counterfeit products to protect trademark owners and consumers.
