Defence Minister Calls For Urgent Probe Into Fatal Army Grenade Training Blast

Date:

Defence Minister Khaled Nordin has called for a swift investigation into the deaths of two soldiers who were killed during a grenade-throwing training exercise at Hobart Camp in Gurun, Kedah, last Tuesday.

He stressed that authorities must expedite the probe to determine exactly what led to the fatal incident, adding that findings from the investigation should be used to strengthen safety procedures within the armed forces.

Khaled noted that grenade training involves strict timing protocols, where the device must be thrown within seven seconds after the pin is pulled. However, he cautioned against speculation until the full investigation is completed.

“We need to investigate what went wrong. I don’t want to make assumptions,” he said, adding that he hoped the process could be completed as soon as possible.

Following the incident, the Malaysian Army has reportedly suspended all grenade-related training activities pending the outcome of the investigation.

The tragedy involved Corporal Norazmi Abu Bakar and Private Siti Khadijah Sungip, who suffered severe injuries after a grenade exploded during the exercise at 10.57am.

Both victims were rushed to Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital in Sungai Petani for treatment but were later confirmed dead upon arrival.
