Father Drowns After Jumping Into Pond To Save Son

Date:

A 46-year-old man drowned while attempting to rescue his eight-year-old son who had fallen into a fish pond at a resort in Sungai Ruan, Raub, on Saturday.

Raub district police chief Superintendent Mohd Shahril Abdul Rahman said police were alerted to the incident involving Mohamed Hafidz Che Din at about 3pm.

Initial investigations found that the boy had fallen into the pond while trying to retrieve a plastic bread container used as fishing bait. Mohamed Hafidz then entered the pond in an attempt to save his son.

The child was eventually rescued by a resort employee and an Indonesian national who were at the scene. However, Mohamed Hafidz failed to resurface and was found about 20 minutes later near a staircase along the edge of the pond.

Mohd Shahril said several attempts were made to revive the victim through cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), but he could not be saved.

The victim was subsequently taken to Raub Hospital for further treatment. However, he was pronounced dead after efforts to revive him failed.

A post-mortem examination conducted at the hospital later established that Mohamed Hafidz died from a lack of oxygen caused by drowning, medically classified as asphyxia secondary to drowning.
