Lorry Crashes Into Cheras Eatery, Driver Allegedly Fell Asleep At Wheel

Date:

A lorry driver whose vehicle crashed into the front of an eatery in Jalan Batu 12, Cheras, yesterday is believed to have fallen asleep at the wheel, with police clarifying that he was not driving under the influence of alcohol as alleged online.

Kajang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Naazron Abdul Yusof said the incident occurred at about 6.30pm while the 37-year-old driver was travelling towards Cheras.

He said the driver is believed to have fallen asleep, causing him to lose control of the lorry before it crashed into the front structure of the eatery.

“The lorry suffered minor damage to its front section, while the eatery sustained damage to its business umbrella and kitchen equipment.

“No casualties or injuries were reported,” he said in a statement today.

Naazron said police detected a video of the incident circulating on social media at about 12.30pm on Friday.

The viral clip showed the lorry continuing along the road after the collision, accompanied by a claim that the driver was drunk and had refused to stop.

However, police investigations found that the driver was believed to have fallen asleep and was not driving under the influence of alcohol.

The case is being investigated under Rule 10 of the Road Traffic Rules 1959 (LN 166/59).

Those with information can contact investigating officer Inspector Saifudin Saadun at 011-2111 9379 to assist with the investigation.

Naazron also urged road users to drive carefully, comply with traffic regulations and remain vigilant to prevent unwanted incidents.
