A 19-year-old Malaysian who was arrested in Hong Kong last week after authorities discovered 3kg of cannabis buds in his luggage is believed to have been recruited by a drug syndicate as a courier.
Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the Sarawak-born teenager had no previous criminal record in Malaysia.
He said the department had received confirmation from Hong Kong authorities regarding the arrest of the teenager, who was detained after arriving at Hong Kong International Airport on July 9.
“Hong Kong customs authorities found 3kg of cannabis buds in the suspect’s baggage after he arrived at the airport,” he said.
Earlier, Hong Kong customs authorities revealed that the suspect had travelled from Kuala Lumpur via Singapore before being arrested during a customs inspection.
The seized drugs were estimated to be worth about HK$500,000 (RM259,918), according to Hong Kong authorities.
Hussein said Malaysian authorities would continue monitoring developments and cooperating with relevant agencies regarding the case.
