Police have arrested a 20-year-old local man who is suspected of threatening to kill his mother and choking his grandmother during a domestic disturbance in Kampung Sungai Tuda, Kalabakan, in June.
Tawau district police chief ACP Rosdi Mat Jusoh said the suspect was arrested at about 6pm on Friday in front of a house in the village.
He said the arrest was made following a police report lodged on June 24, with the case being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation.
According to Rosdi, the incident allegedly occurred at about 11pm on June 23, when the suspect’s younger brother received a call from their mother saying the suspect was causing a disturbance at the family home.
The suspect allegedly threatened to kill his mother and choked his grandmother during the incident.
Rosdi said the younger brother rushed home and found the suspect still in an agitated state. He attempted to calm and restrain him to prevent the situation from escalating, but a struggle subsequently broke out between the brothers, leaving the younger sibling injured.
The suspect was later asked to leave the house as he was allegedly carrying a spanner, which family members feared could be used to harm them.
Police have detained the suspect to assist with further investigations, including an initial urine screening.
Rosdi stressed that police would take firm action against threats or aggressive behaviour that could endanger public safety, including incidents involving family members.
He also urged members of the public to contact the police immediately if they face any security threats so that appropriate action can be taken.
