A man dressed as Ultraman was temporarily detained after police found his behaviour suspicious near the main stage of Perak’s National Day celebrations today.
The man, believed to be a local in his 40s, was detained at around 5am after entering and remaining in the vicinity of the main stage, where Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah and members of the Perak royal family were scheduled to be seated.
Perak police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the man had not caused any disturbance, but officers decided to intervene as a precaution after noticing his behaviour.
“Although he had not caused any disturbance, the man was detained because his behaviour appeared suspicious. Checks also found that the suspect had a record related to mental illness,” he said, according to Berita Harian.
Mohd Alwi said the man told police he had come to watch the National Day celebrations. However, officers decided to temporarily detain him and refer him to Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta in Tanjung Rambutan for further assessment.
The state-level celebration, held in front of Ipoh Town Hall, was attended by Sultan Nazrin and Raja Permaisuri Perak Tuanku Zara Salim, along with Raja Muda Perak Raja Jaafar Raja Muda Musa, Raja Di Hilir Perak Raja Iskandar Dzulkarnain Idris Shah, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad and members of the state executive council.
The incident also brought back memories of last year’s Perak National Day celebrations, when a woman was detained after she was filmed running towards Sultan Nazrin while he was standing at attention during the state anthem.
Authorities later confirmed that the woman had a psychiatric condition and said her mental state had contributed to her actions during the incident.
