A newborn baby girl was found dead in a toilet bowl at a rented student house in Taman Setia Mutiara, Kluang, Johor, with police suspecting she had sustained multiple stab wounds.
The incident came to light after a 19-year-old female college student was taken to Hospital Enche Besar Hajjah Kalsom in Kluang for treatment after she was believed to have given birth.
Johor Police Chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said the student had contacted her teacher before being taken to the hospital to inform them of her condition.
Medical examinations found that the teenager had recently given birth. Doctors also discovered she was still carrying another baby, who was later delivered safely at the same hospital.
Police launched an investigation after receiving a report at about 1pm regarding the student’s admission to hospital.
Officers subsequently searched the rented house where the student was staying and discovered the body of a newborn baby girl inside the toilet bowl.
Initial examinations revealed several suspected stab wounds on the infant’s body. However, police said the exact cause of death and the number of injuries would only be confirmed after a post-mortem examination.
Ab Rahaman said police have also arrested a 19-year-old man, believed to be the student’s boyfriend and a fellow college student, to assist in the investigation.
Police are seeking a remand order against the suspect at the Kluang Magistrate’s Court to facilitate further investigations.
The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder and Section 315 of the Penal Code, which relates to acts committed with the intention of preventing a child from being born alive or causing the child’s death after birth.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances that led to the newborn’s death.
