Malaysian police have identified an individual believed to be linked to the investigation into a Malaysian pilot who was arrested in Indonesia over alleged drug smuggling.
Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the individual is believed to have been on duty during the security screening process at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) before the pilot departed for Jakarta.
He said the individual will be called in to assist with investigations.
The pilot was arrested by Indonesian authorities after allegedly attempting to smuggle several types of drugs into the country upon arriving at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta.
Following the arrest, the Royal Malaysia Police launched an investigation to determine how the drugs were able to leave Malaysia and whether other individuals or an international drug syndicate were involved.
Hussein said investigators are examining how the suspect passed through security screening at KLIA and are working closely with the Indonesian National Police (Polri) and the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) to uncover the full network behind the alleged smuggling operation.
He added that under KLIA’s security procedures, all passengers undergo multiple screening stages. However, if the initial scanner detects no suspicious items, passengers are not subjected to additional inspections.
According to Hussein, the pilot successfully passed all security checks, including the initial screening, without raising any suspicion before boarding the flight to Indonesia.
